The Intellectual Dessert
Another one of the great things about working at Sun has been the opportunity to hear weekly lecturers.
Intellectual Dessert is a weekly lecture program which started about 1992. Jeanie Treichel coined the name, thinking that the 3:00 pm weekly time frame was cause for dessert of an intellectual nature, hence “Intellectual Dessert.” She had long known that the promise of dessert produces larger audiences. While Jeanie provided the dessert and communication to the Labs, the first staff member to chair the event on a weekly basis, planning for and selecting speakers, was Yousef Khalidi. After a couple of years, he was followed by other staff members and now, Jeff Rulifson.
Currently these talks are held weekly, usually on Thursdays at 1:00 pm in MPK16’s Palace of Fine Arts Conference room. Encompassing a wide variety of timely topics, these lectures, accompanied by a sampling of desserts, most often feature speakers on some area of computer technology, although some talks are given by people from much more diverse areas of expertise. They are open to all Sun employees
